About the role

This vacancy is for a WG-5334-10, Marine Machinery Mechanic located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), Base Boston, Naval Engineering Department, Industrial Production Facility (IPF) South Portland in South Portland, Maine.

What you'll do

You will serve as a Marine Machinery Mechanic and be responsible for executing independent and small work crew performance of multi trade preventative maintenance and repair of small boats, along with support of new or replacement equipment installations. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Removing machinery from boats, ships, or stations, for repairs or modifications. Disassembling, repairing, and testing machinery such as marine diesel engines, both mobile and stationary. Disassembling all components of engines such as cylinder heads, fuel systems, lubrications systems, cooling systems, blowers, and turbochargers. Installing, adjusting, setting, repairing, and/or replacing engine controls, governors, unloaders, safety valves, steering gear and rudders.

Qualifications

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Troubleshooting National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
